Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia: Disney Cruise Ship Godmothers

Disney Cruise Ship Godmothers

Do you know today’s Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia about Disney Cruise Ships?

The naming and christening of ships dates back to the 3rd millennium B.C.  As part of the christening of a cruise ship, the ship’s godmother is entrusted with guiding the ship to and from its various ports, as well as with the safety of the passengers and crew.  In order to ensure guidance and safety of the ship and those aboard, the godmother blesses the ship at a christening ceremony.  Celebrities are often chosen to be the godmothers of modern cruise ships.

Like other cruise lines, Disney Cruise Lines also names a Godmother for each of their ships.  The Godmother of the first Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Magic, is Patricia Disney.  Patricia is the former wife of Walt’s nephew, Roy O. Disney.  In 1999, Disney put their own spin on this maritime tradition, naming the first Fairy Godmother of a cruise ship.  Tinkerbell was named the Godmother of the Disney Wonder.  In a christening ceremony, she sprinkled pixie dust as she flew alongside the ship.  In 2011, Jennifer Hudson, who started her singing career onboard the Disney Wonder became the Godmother of the Disney Dream.  The Godmother of Disney’s newest ship, the Disney Fantasy, is Mariah  Carey.  In 2012, she christened the ship which launched from her hometown of New York City.
