Fastpass To History: Chernabog

Fastpass To History: Chernabog

It’s almost Halloween – the time for candy, costumes, and Disney villains! This week we’re going to take a look at some of the history behind Chernabog, who I consider to be the scariest Disney villain ever. In fact, Walt Disney once referred to this creepy character as “Satan himself.”

Chernabog was animated by Vladmir Tytla, an animator from the Ukraine. The folklore of his culture strongly played a role in the animation of Chernabog. In the Slavic culture, Chernabog is known as the black god. He was first mentioned in Slavic mythology in the 12th century and was referred to as an evil god.

Chernabog is known for his appearance in the Night On Bald Mountain sequence of the 1940 film Fantasia. The segment features music written by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, which I imagine is why Disney chose to include the Slavic black god in the animation.

When we first see Chernabog in Night On Bald Mountain,  he appears as Bald Mountain itself overlooking a village. Then it is revealed that Bald Mountain is not a mountain, but the monstrous creature’s wings. After stretching out his arms, Chernabog summons all kinds of ghosts and demons, as well as fire.

Between his glowing eyes, menacing expressions, and monstrous size, Chernabog makes quite the impression on viewers of Night On Bald Mountain. He has since appeared in several other Disney films and television shows, as well as a few video games. Chernabog can also be seen with the Disney villains on some merchandise. He has even made appearances in the Disney parks, including a large, terrifying parade float in SpectroMagic.
