I recently had the pleasure of listening to the Walt Disney The Legacy Collection albums for The Lion King, Mary Poppins, and Sleeping Beauty. The Legacy Collection albums showcase the timeless music of many of the classic Disney films,  as well as, some of the Lost Chord songs which never made it into the films. Each album comes in a cute case which resembles a book and features beautiful artwork. Included in each album is also a booklet providing a little insight into the  history of the film and the film’s Lost Chords. The Legacy Collection albums are a must have for any fan of Disney music and Disney history.

Lion King

The Lion King: The Legacy Collection {affiliate link} was the first of these albums to be released. I have always loved the music of The Lion King, so I greatly enjoyed listening to these familiar songs once again. Upon looking at the album’s track listings, I was happy to see The Morning Report listed on Disc 2. I first discovered this song on the blu-ray release of The Lion King. It’s such a fun song! This collection also features another lost song from the film. Warthog Rhapsody is a cute song about none other than our favorite warthog, Pumbaa. You’ll definitely want to listen to these two Lost Chord songs.

Also included in The Legacy Collection: The Lion King are the film’s many beloved songs, the outstanding score by Hans Zimmer, and Elton John’s version of several of the film’s songs. In the booklet, the film’s producer Don Hahn shares a bit of history about how the music of The Lion King came together. You will also find song lyrics and gorgeous concept art from the film.

Mary Poppins

I was most excited to listen to The Legacy Collection: Mary Poppins {affiliate link}. The music Richard and Robert Sherman wrote for this film is brilliant. Even the songs which did not make it into the final version of the film are fantastic. Because of my interest in Disney history and the Sherman Brothers (my favorite Disney songwriters), I was thrilled a few years ago when I heard Disney was making a film about the making of Mary Poppins. Saving Mr. Banks is a wonderful film which brings a lot of insight into the filmmaking process and how Disney was finally able to secure rights for Mary Poppins.

In Saving Mr. Banks, you see sessions in which P.L. Travers, Don DaGradi, and the Sherman Brothers discussed ideas and songs for Mary Poppins. Each of these sessions were recorded, and much to my delight, some of those recordings are included in The Legacy Collection: Mary Poppins! It is so interesting to hear more about how one of my favorite films came into being.

In addition to the classic Mary Poppins songs from the film, this collection includes pre-demos of many of these songs. These demos are sung by the Sherman Brothers. It is so special to hear these songs sung by the composers. I especially love hearing Richard Sherman sing Feed The Birds. At Walt’s request, Richard would often sing this song in Walt’s office on Fridays. Even after Walt’s death, Richard would often return to play Walt’s favorite song.

The Legacy Collection: Mary Poppins also features Lost Chords from the film. Among those lost songs are Admiral Boom, The Chimpanzooand The Eyes of LoveAnother Lost Chord in this collection is The Land of Sand which did find its way into a classic Disney film even though it was not used for Mary Poppins. After  The Sherman Brothers re-wrote the words to the song, The Land of Sand became Trust In Me from The Jungle Book.

Sleeping Beauty

The songs from the classic Disney film Sleeping Beauty are showcased on the third Legacy Collection album I received. This album includes all of the film’s songs, including my personal favorite Once Upon A DreamIn addition to the music we’ve heard in the film, The Legacy Collection: Sleeping Beauty {affiliate link} also includes several Lost Chords. I especially love It Happens I Have A Picture. This song features Aurora and Phillip’s fathers telling each other about their young children.

The booklet included in The Legacy Collection: Sleeping Beauty includes a history of the film, as well as, the stories for each of the Lost Chords. In addition, you will find concept art from the film, including several full-page illustrations.

The first three Legacy Collection albums are spectacular and will be a must have for any Disney fan! Luckily, The Legacy Collection is not limited to just these three films. Walt Disney Records will be releasing quite a few Legacy Collection albums over the next year!
