The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: What You Didn’t Know

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: What You Didn't Know

In 1949, Disney release their version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as part of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. This cartoon short tells the story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. I grew up watching Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at Halloween. To this day, it is still a cartoon I love to watch around Halloween. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting trivia associated with Disney’s version of this classic tale.

  • The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, including The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is narrated by Bing Crosby.
  • The character of Brom Bones later become the inspiration for another Disney character over 40 years later. Gaston from Disney’s Beauty & The Beast is based off of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’s Brom Bones.
  • Brom Bones was also the inspiration for Sir Kay from Disney’s The Sword In The Stone.
  • In addition to The Horned King from The Black Cauldron and Chernabog from Fantasia, the Headless Horseman is considered one of the scariest Disney villains.
  • The song “The Headless Horseman” was originally planned to be sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. While this did not happen for the short itself, his version of the song can be heard on Walt Disney Records Archive Collection, Vol. 1.
  • Much like “Hellfire” which was almost cut from The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” the song “The Headless Horseman” is considered to be one of the darkest songs written for a Disney cartoon.
  • Katrina was modeled after Grace Martin from Make Mine Music in order to save money on the animation process. Her character also closely resembles Slue Foot Sue from Melody Time.

Will you be watching Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to celebrate Halloween this year?
