Top 10 Thrill Rides at Walt Disney World

Top 10 Disney Thrill Rides - Dinosaur

While Disney parks may be known for meet & greets with Mickey, Fantasyland dark rides, and kiddie coasters, the parks have so much more to offer for guests looking for a bit of a thrill. Walt Disney World is home to quite a few thrill rides. If you’re a thrill seeker headed to Walt Disney World, you’ll want to visit each of these top 10 Disney thrill rides.

10. Test Track

At number 10 on our list, Test Track allows guests to design their own car and then put it through several tests designed to rate the capability, responsiveness, efficiency, and power of each car as you ride the attraction. Your car will travel over rough terrain, through baked curves, and up hills. You will then race around the outside of the building reaching speeds up to 65 miles per hour.

9. Mission: SPACE

This attraction is so intense Disney had to offer two version of the ride. The more intense Orange Mission version sends guests on a trip through space to visit the red planet. On this version of the attraction, a centrifuge is used to simulate speed, shuttle launch, and re-entry for this Mars expedition. The Orange Mission experience has been known to motion sickness in some guests.

For a less intense experience, choose the Green Mission experience which uses only a motion simulator and is less likely to cause motion sickness. This mission sends guests on an orbit around Earth for magnificent views of our planet.

8. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

This attraction really is “the wildest ride in the wilderness”! Once your train leaves the station, you will climb a hill and then begin speeding through the mining town. The numerous hills found on Big Thunder Mountain will have guests lifting off their seats. While you’re at Big Thunder Mountain, be sure to check out the clever names of each train such as I. M. Brave and U. R. Daring.

7. Splash Mountain

On this log flume ride, you will take a plunge down a 52 and a half foot drop at the top of Splash Mountain. Logs can reach maximum speeds of 40 miles per hour, making this the fastest attraction in the Magic Kingdom.

6. DINOSAUR

At this attraction, you will travel back to prehistoric times in a time rover. Your mission is to bring back one very large dino before the meteor impact…the one that wiped out most lifeforms on Earth. This ride takes place mostly in the dark and is very rough, bumpy, and loud. Your time rover stops next to several large dinosaurs, including the vicious looking Carnataurus. This ride is extremely intense and may be too scary for some children.

5. Expedition Everest

Once aboard your train, you will ascend the highest mountain in the world in search of the mysterious Yeti of the mountain. You will then begin barreling down the track only to find that the Yeti has ripped apart the train tracks ahead of you. Your train suddenly comes to a stop, before racing backwards into the mountain. Your train travels 80 feet down the mountain, in and out of caves, in an attempt to escape the dreaded Yeti.

4. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Step aboard a maintenance service elevator as you travel in the footsteps of five guests who mysteriously disappeared from the hotel’s elevator on Halloween night in 1939.  As your elevator shoots up towards the top of the hotel, the doors open allowing you to see out over the rest of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  Then you will experience multiple freefalls down the elevator shaft.  This experience is different each time, so you never know when the next drop will be.

3. Flight of Passage

While Flight of Passage, located in Pandora – The World of Avatar, may not be your typical thrill ride, this simulator attraction is definitely a thrill. Words can’t accurately describe how amazing Flight of Passage actually is. This attraction feels like you really are flying through the skies of Pandora on the back of a banshee. I have never experienced anything like Flight of Passage. This attraction is one you’ll have to experience for yourself to fully understand how thrilling Flight of Passage actually is.

2. Summit Plummet

At Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park, you will see a large ski jump located on Mount Gushmore.  If you’re daring enough, you can plunge down this 12 story water slide.  This slide is so steep that you won’t even be able to see where you’re going.  Once at the bottom, you can see your top speed displayed.

1. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

Taking the number one spot for the most thrilling attraction is a ride that combines loud rock music, high speeds, and multiple loops. Your limo takes off from 0 to 60 mph in only 2.8 seconds. This sends you hurling down the track traveling through L.A. to get to the Aerosmith concert. As you travel through the city, you’ll go upside down multiple times with 2 rollover loops and one corkscrew. Best of all, the 125 speakers and 24 subs found in each limo blast classic Aerosmith songs on a 32,000 watt audio system. Each limo broadcasts different songs, so your experience is likely to be different every time.

This is a great list – I haven’t experienced Summit Plummet (I have yet to visit a Disney water park) or Mission Space Orange (I am too worried that it will make me sick so I only ever ride Green). But all my favorites are there: Tower of Terror, Rockin’ Rollercoaster, and Expedition Everest. Space Mountain is one of my favorites, and must’ve just missed the top ten because I think it is pretty thrilling!

Space Mountain did just miss the top 10! It was actually on the list before I updated it, but I felt like Flight of Passage needed to be added, which bumped Space Mountain off the list. I almost removed Summit Plummet to keep Space Mountain, but I’m terrified of Summit Plummet so I figured that one is definitely a thrill if you’re brave enough to do it. Tower of Terror is my favorite too!

This is a great list! While i do avoid Mission:SPACE and Expedition Everest- both make me sick- they are still awesome thrill rides! Is RNR your favorite- since it was #1 or did you survey people to get #1?

Kimberly

No, RNR is definitely not my favorite. It takes off a little too fast for me! And yet I ride it every trip… I thought it was a good choice for #1 since it’s a little too intense for me and so many people love it. My favorite is Tower of Terror. I could ride that all day!

Great list Kim! I never realized that Splash Mountain was the fastest attraction in the Magic Kingdom! Summit Plummet is wicked. Did it once and will never do it again. When the cast member tells you to lean back, LISTEN! I lifted my head and burned the skin off of my spine. Talk about pain. Crazy Crazy ride.

Ouch! I don’t plan on ever trying Summit Plummet…it just doesn’t sound like fun to me.

Great list!! We haven’t been to any of the water parks yet but might have to go one of these days for research of course! 😉

The water parks are fun. You should try them sometime. I think Typhoon Lagoon is my favorite, but I love Blizzard Beach too.

I’d forgotten how amazing Space Mountain really was until last trip. I LOVED it all over again.

It is so fun! I think it’s even better since it was refurbished several years ago.

I haven’t either…don’t think I ever will. I’m not quite brave enough for that one!

That’s a great list Kimberly. I will eventually mark them all off – when I get up the courage. I have already promised Diane we would do ToT on my next visit.

Kimberly

Yes, you need to! It is my absolute favorite ride in all of WDW!

This list would be a great challenge for any ride junkie! Personally, I’ve only been on one, but I’m the biggest ride chicken there is.

Kimberly

Thanks! I’ve done all of them but one…I’m way too chicken to ever go on Summit Plummet!
